they’re supposed to be hateable. they’re supposed to be human but hateable. the musical pulled this off really well. painting unlikeable people as minorities, however, is a . Very bad idea. minorities can be good and bad just like everyone else, but paint the most unlikeable characters in the series as the Only minorities, as insecure minorities who clawed their way to the top, is just. disgusting.

martha was supposed to represent how fat people are outcasted, especially in the musical, when she was obviously good friends with one of the jocks until societal pressure came around. she was supposed to be the sweet, quirky, offbeat girl who was ostracized for her weight. now shes ?? fucking skinny? and her name is changed to shelby?

and jd ending up in a straightjacket and surviving is wrong on so many levels. heathers fan may say they wished jd survived but putting a fan favorite character in a mental hospital at the ending is such a twisted and ableist ending. mental hospitals are fucking horrible. in fact, he probably killed himself to keep from ending up in there.

him dying at the end is very fitting for his character and the story. there was no need to make him live.

so many changes that didnt need to be made, were made, and i’m fucking bitter.

1. The Heathers are minorities/people that are usually bullied in these kinds of shows.
Normally i don’t mind a change like this but it’s different with the Heathers who are the bullies. A better choice, in my opinion, would to do the same as berkeley’s Heathers and have a girl JD.
(The actress herself wrote an essay on why that would make sense so come on people!)

2. JD in a straightjacket?
Though there’s nothing confirmed, this does give the assumption that JD lives in the end. Why? We don’t know.

3. Chandler lives?
Not sure about this one either but there’s a picture of the actress that plays chandler taking the position of veronica of the movie’s ending scene with martha.
Again why?

4. Duke’s mother makes an appearance.
This is not a major thing but it means that the tv show will most likely throw in some things of its own.

The issue with the mother is that we know nothing about her besides the description implying that she’s a gold-digger. (How original)

Hey kids!!! Were you ever watching Heathers and found yourself thinking, “Boy, I love the murder, but wish someone would change this dumb ass message!”? Well I have the product for you!

I can’t help but feel a bit annoyed that they’ve chosen to make the Heathers minorities that are barely respected, let alone worshiped, in high schools. It feels very tacked on to try and appeal to the modern teenage demographic, not like a thoughtful addition to their characters. Plus, it just bugs me to see people who struggle a lot in high school environments to be portrayed as the people making those environments so toxic. We don’t get much good representation, and until we do, I don’t think I want to see us villainized.

This version of Heathers feels like it’s pushing itself to be “realistic” and “modern”, which doesn’t really work for a dark comedy from the 80s. A big staple of Heathers is it’s time period. Heathers takes place in an era when mental health was a taboo subject, which is a part of what really makes it work. JD not receiving any treatment for his unhealthy homelife, childhood trauma, and clear mental issues? That would have happened in the 80s, because a man receiving mental health treatment was laughable. Kurt and Ram, and their extreme toxic masculinity? Again, something that would go completely unchecked in that era, as would any of the Heathers’ behavior. I could go on, but I’m trying to keep this rant at least sort of short.

Either way, this show will have to change the plot and message of Heathers to make itself work, which bothers me a lot. A tv show about how toxic modern high schools are sounds great, but it can’t be that while also trying to be a Cult Classic from the 80s. Plus, the plot of Heathers just doesn’t lend itself well to the tv show format! It will either be a bad show and a good adaptation, or a good show and a bad adaptation, neither of which I’m interested in.

But that’s just me.
