I see a lot of posts about Homestuck and cautioning new readers and telling them it gets good later. So here’s my first time reading Homestuck post:
1. You might fall in love with Act 1. You aren’t alone. For me, Act 1 was hilarious and I was instantly invested in the comic. Everyone says Act 3 or 4 is when shit gets real. For me, it was End of Act 1.
2. You also might fall in love with the Intermission. You are also not alone. The Intermission is great and it’s greatness gets overshadowed a lot. Many posts say it’s unenjoyable and downright confusing. It might just be your favorite.
3. THE CARACPACES ARE GOOD GODDAMN IT. Their world, their plots, their stories gave the comic a whole new feel. The Exiles, The Midnight Crew, so much of them are integral to how the early parts of the comic work. Telling readers they’ll dislike them and to just get through them to get to the rest is so insulting to the characters. Give them a chance, they might be your favorites.
4. The comic used to be done in reader submitted prompts. This was abandoned pretty early on, but it explains some of the randomness of the first parts. Before the forums imploded you could actually go back and see those early reader submissions. It was really cool to see what John, Rose, Dave and Jade were almost named.
5. There are a lot of callbacks and references to Hussie’s other works. It’s not integral to read Problem Sleuth before Homestuck, but if you find yourself enjoying the earlier parts of the comic like I did, it’s well worth the read. In fact, I recommend Jail Break and Bard’s Quest too. I especially reccomend And It Don’t Stop, another web comic Hussie did before Homestuck.
6. Read the pesterlogs but also look at each drawing on the page. The early parts have some of the best world building and coolest designs. The Lands, the early flashes, they’re all grand. Don’t rush through to “get to the good stuff”. The good stuff is right there, you’re reading it. Enjoy the videogame references, the walk around exploration parts, explore, read and pay attention to little character quirks.
7. Enjoy the comic. Take your time. Homestuck is a big comic with lots of content. I caught up in two weeks, but that was back in 2011. Go at whatever pace you go. You can’t read it wrong. (Unless you skip the pesterlogs)
8. I only added an 8th spot because 8 is a reoccurring number in the comic. I’m out of advice.
9. Honestlly, though quite a few might not like it, the voice acted Let’s Read is a pretty good way to move through the comic if you aren’t that good with reading or simply can’t force yourself to read some parts. Act 1 and the Intermission move at a very nice and comfortable pace with voice acting and made me appreciate them way, way more. Some people say they suck or you should skip them and really, it’s just a matter of taking time and the Let’s Read is amazing for that
I still can’t get over how this is Andrew Hussie as a child. It’s so fucking weird to think that at some point, Hussie was a child. Like, a real human being an not some kind of cryptic entity.
i know fucking nothing about homestuck and every time i try to get a grasp on some information about it, fucking anything at all, it feels like im having a fucking stroke like i just tried to read a god damn wiki page for a main character and like its just words its just a fucking incoherent string of words it doesnt make any sense what the fuck
what the fuck is this what does this mean what the fuck doe st hsi mean
Mr. Krabs weeps for the death of his millionth dollar. He will find out who did this. And there is only one person he knew who could do the job and make sure the perpetrator never tastes another Krabby Patty again.
